Located in Chaweng, Top Ten Restaurant and Bar is difficult to miss with its 15- foot high wooden doors and outside water feature with gas flames. Open on two sides, it has a modern feel with pale wooden furniture and a high vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden beams. Coconut trunks form supporting pillars all around the restaurant and add a touch of tropical splendor.
With over twenty years experience, Executive Chef Steven Van Duyn is hoping to make the newly opened restaurant a stand-out dining spot on Samui. “We want to do something completely different” he says. He can often be found in the restaurant chatting away to customers and providing a personal touch in the large, 100 seat dining area.
Steven oversees the selection of menu items and food preparation. A deconstructed Nicoise Salad is the jewel of the starters, as is the pan fried seas scallops with shitake mushrooms, while the Risotto Nero which is drenched in squid ink with seafood marinara, fried basil, parsley oil and garlic chips is a total delight.
Braised veal cheeks are a popular choice for a main meal as they come with dumplings, roasted vegetables, white onion puree and red wine sauce.
The Wagyu beef rib eye steak has bourbon infused grain mustard and melts in the mouth.
Desserts are a special treat. The crème brulee is the most requested item and is free-form, served with a composition of citrus flavours including passion fruit jelly and lemon curd. The home made ice-cream and sorbet platter includes such delicacies as avocado ice-cream and strawberry and cracked pepper sorbet – absolutely modern and absolutely delicious.
The wine list is extensive with over sixty wines, twenty of them served by the glass. Old and New World wines are featured. Alcoholic beverages of all kinds can be ordered and sipped at the central island bar which has a view all over the restaurant. Live music can be enjoyed in the evenings and is a great accompaniment to a special night out. Top Ten Restaurant and Bar places an emphasis on quality and is already staking its place as a ‘top’ choice in the Chaweng restaurant scene.
