When you are first thinking about going to Koh Samui you might think that it is a tropical island and probably is very limited in options for dining. You might be expecting some decently prepared traditional Thai food and that is about it. But that is definitely not the truth. On Samui there are not many, many first-class restaurants that feature cuisine from all around the world as well as traditional Thai food that is much better than just “decent.”
Although most of the restaurants are in the Chaweng Beach area it is a great idea to explore some of the restaurants that can be found farther away. If you don’t, you will miss some truly amazing restaurants that can be found all over the island. Follow is a selection of what Samui is offering and you should try several of these restaurants while you are staying on the island. You definitely will not regret it!
Time for Romance
Dining On The Rocks Restaurant at Sila Evason Hideaway
There is a fabulous restaurant at Sila Eason Hideaway & Spa which is called Dining on the Rocks. It has a stunning, unending 270 degree view of the sea and outlying islands which surround it. It boasts very private dining with its tables for two that are located over eight distinct areas of the restaurant. There will never be more than a few tables in one particular area. The most romantic table of all is the lone table that sits by itself on a private deck. This table is often booked many days in advance because of its popularity with couples. The restaurant’s menu is quite innovative and, in addition to its fusion of Western and Asian styles, includes what is probably a “New Asian Cuisine.” It also has a wine selection that has been chosen especially to go with each dish. While you’re there, be sure to try the 10 course “Experiences” dinner to get a real taste of what you can experience when you go to this restaurant.
Chef Chom’s at Tongsai Bay Cottages
This restaurant is able to claim that it offers “Royal Thai Cuisine” because Chef Chom herself is from a family that once cooked in the palace of the late Princess Vibhavadee Rangsit. Also delicious is a featured dish known as “Tongsai Thai Salad with Seafood,” which has won awards and in an amazing home style of Thai cooking.
Chef Chom’s can be found on a hill and its rooms are very airy and spacious with seating both inside and outside. It includes stunning views of the bay below and, even though it is some distance away from most places at Choeng Mon Beach, it is certainly work making the trip at least once while you are in Samui.
Zazen Restaurant at Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa
This is a restaurant with a unique design that is located near the edge of the water between Bophut and Maenam. It has a menu that is “contemporary East to West Cuisine.” There is a very strong emphasis on using ingredients which are healthy and organic when possible and this can easily happen on the island Samui. Zazen restaurant has several menus that are pre-set such as their “Asian Tropical Menu” which features Oriental Cuisine from at least 6 different countries. There is also the four-course lobster menu designed for two and there is an a la carte menu that is quite extensive. The wine cellar features over 75 different wine varieties and is at least as good as the selection of food.
