Come for the seaside atmosphere, but stay – and return – for the delightful gourmet comfort food. The Tent just happens to be located within the grounds of SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort, but this beachfront restaurant and bar is so much more than just a resort restaurant.

All the ingredients for a sophisticated tropical dining experience are there – the restaurant is draped along a beachside lawn that fronts a quiet stretch of palm-peppered beach in upscale north Chaweng. Diners have the choice of indoor seating, private dining spaces or gazebos, depending on the occasion.

The international menu includes everything from raw food, hearty sandwiches, pasta and pizza to fresh surf and turf mains. A substantial Thai menu pays homage to the country destination, showcasing some of finest flavours from all corners of Thailand that have given the kingdom its legendary culinary reputation.

For diners who can’t decide what to order, The Tent has taken away the guesswork with the Sala Signature seafood platter for two (THB 3,700++), available for lunch or dinner. The curated selection – which comes with a choice of sides and sauces – includes grilled Canadian lobster, salmon, trout, Asian sea bass and scallops on hot rocks with poached king shrimp, mussels, blue swimmer crab, smoked salmon pate and crab mayonnaise. Dinnertime comes with the added option of the Thai set menu (THB 1,975++) which includes three light appetizers followed by main course “Thai style” with an exquisite table full of delicious Thai food followed by a light dessert and organic Chiang Rai tea.

Whiling away lazy afternoons next to your private pool or on the beach requires a commitment to relaxation. So, for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, the restaurant serves Afternoon Tea for two (THB 995++), featuring scones with clotted cream and all the frills, plus sweet treats such as fudge brownie and oat coconut slice. The accompanying selection of savoury sandwiches includes truffled egg mayo and cucumber classics, as well as a zesty crab lemon and dill option. A wide selection of premium teas, sourced from around the world, goes perfectly with the homemade jam and bread, while a selection of premium organic teas is delivered from northern Thailand.

On Tuesdays, The Tent turns into a gourmet Thai Street Market (THB 995++ person) from 7 – 10 p.m., complete with live cooking stations, traditional dance and musical performances. The restaurant also celebrates the indulgence of weekends with a RDB Night (THB 995++ per night) every Saturday, where the namesake pork ribs, hot dogs, and juicy burgers take centre grill on the beach from 7 – 10 p.m. The sizzling affair is accompanied by a choice of tasty side dishes, tableside ceviche preparations, fresh salads, a raw seafood bar, and sweet tooth treats. An acoustic duo add sizzle to the evening with live R&B, soul, and funk renditions of chart hits through the ages.

Regardless which day of the week it is, Happy Hour smiles from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Tent with a buy-one-get-one promotion – raising the stakes on getting that front row seat for sunset as you drink in the island beauty.
